Spring Classes at SFCB!

With the holidays and teaching, I haven’t had a chance to add all my new bookbinding classes at the San Francisco Center for the Book. This month I will be teaching Intermediate Bookbinding. This class is already full, but if you are interested in learning more advanced bookbinding techniques, I will be teaching it again this summer. Beginning Bookbinding at SFCB

In November I am teaching Beginning Bookbinding, a 4-day class at the San Francisco Center for the Book. It runs Saturdays, November 5, 12, 19 and December 3. It is part of the Center’s new long form style of classes that allow for more in depth study and practice. And in January I will be teaching Intermediate Bookbinding. Students who take both Beginning and Intermediate Bookbinding will receive a certificate from the Center. Check the Center’s website for more details.

The new schedule of bookbinding classes have been announced at the San Francisco Center for the Book! I am teaching two box making classes: Three Ways to House Your Book and Custom Cases for Your Digital Device. And my Kwikprint class has been expanded to include a session on how to create a recessed label on a book cover! Look at my teaching page for more information. I just discovered this blog devoted to books–particularly the obscure and eclectic. There are many sites for bookbinding and book arts, but this one really stood out for its selection of bindings that I have never seen before! Refreshing and inspired! Gold Tooling at SFCB

In March I am teaching an introductory class on blind and gold tooling at the San Francisco Center for the Book. Blind and gold tooling are traditional methods for decorating leather bindings. Using practice leather plaquettes, we will work with gold leaf and to use brass decorative tools to create lines and patterns. Go to my teaching page for more information.

The Codex Bookfair

This weekend begins the Codex Bookfair on the UC Berkeley campus. This is a really fun event where you can meet printers, book artists, bookbinders, and see their work. Vendors sell specialty papers, leather, and much more! I will be working the San Francisco Center for the Book’s table on Sunday afternoon so come by and say hello!

Crossed Structure binding at SFCB

On Sunday, December 5 I am teaching the crossed structure binding at the San Francisco Center for the Book. What I like about this structure is the way that the covers become part of the sewing structure and interlock with each other from front to back. My teaching page has more information about registration.
